Evocation for Wind Ensemble (2026)

Duration: 5'

Read by Eastman Wind Ensemble, conducted by Zach Griffin

Program notes:

The idea of Evocation stems from an imaginary summoning ritual, calling forth deities through incantations, spells, and dances. Many gestures of the music directly paint an image of the ritual, including the dark, chaotic glissandi of the trombones at the beginning, the ceremonial, procession-like heterophonic woodwind statements, and the incantation-evoking English horn solo in the middle section. This piece is also inspired by elements of East Asian music, mainly the idea of heterophony, which is employed across the entire piece, and the textures and timbres of gagaku, particularly the timbre of hichiriki, a double reed Japanese instrument used in gagaku.
